Drew Foster

I'm a doctoral candidate in the sociology department at the University of Michigan. I research social aspects of the body, health, and expertise. I also really love teaching.

Right now I’m completing my dissertation: an investigation of the impact of the internet on the experience of illness. I am conducting virtual ethnography, including offline interviews, of two prominent online health communities. The project seeks to illuminate if and how patients disrupt the long-held authority of medical professionals by collaborating and commiserating in online social space with individuals who suffer from the same conditions that they do.
